This is the tale of an earlier voyage by HMS Beagle, later made famous by its naturalist passenger Charles Darwin. Four natives of Tierra del Fuego were brought to England by Captain Robert Fitzroy in 1830. One, bought for a mother-of-pearl button, was christened Jeremy Button. Having been "civilised", they were returned to their homeland (this was Darwin's voyage) to spread the word among their fellow islanders. Hazlewood uses the story to meditate on the nature of civilisation. (Sceptre, 7.99)
